Call of Duty: Warzone is a free battle royale that launches tomorrow

A new Call of Duty battle royale game is arriving tomorrow to compete with PlayerUnknown’s BattlegroundsFortnite, and Apex LegendsCall of Duty: Warzone is a new free-to-play battle royale that will be available to play on March 10th with some unique twists. There have been many Warzone leaks in recent weeks, but the game is officially arriving tomorrow, and you won’t even need Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to download and play since it’s free for everyone.

Much like Apex Legends, players will be able to form squads of three across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Warzone will also include cross-progression and cross-play so friends on any system can play together.

Vehicles in Call of Duty: Warzone.

There are two modes: traditional Battle Royale and a Plunder mode. Up to 150 players will duke it out in the Battle Royale mode, with gas chasing them for the closing circle. In Plunder, players will need to collect the most cash from looting items across the map, stealing enemies’ cash, or completing in-game Contracts.

Warzone is set in a giant city dubbed Verdansk, with more than 300 points of interest and landmarks for looting. You’ll also be able to use vehicles to transport around the map, including an ATV, rover, SUV, cargo truck, and even a helicopter.

One of the most unique parts of Warzone is a 1-vs-1 respawn mechanic. Dubbed Gulag, it allows players who have died to respawn if they win a 1-vs-1 battle. If your teammates are also part of the Gulag queue, they can spectate the fight from a balcony and even assist by throwing rocks at opponents to stun them. Players will be able to enter the Gulag if their teammates have completed enough Contracts or earned enough in-game cash to redeploy them.

A variety of Contracts will exist in Warzone, including simple scavenger missions to open supply boxes or ones to secure locations against enemies. Some Contracts even reward unique perks in the game like the ability to see the next circle collapse location before the ring starts to close. Cash can also be used to purchase items at specific buy stations on the map, and you can purchase killstreaks, redeploy tokens for teammates, self-revive kits, and more.

Call of Duty: Warzone will be available across PS4, Xbox One, and PC tomorrow starting at 10AM PT / 1PM ET for Modern Warfare owners and 12PM PT / 3PM ET for everyone else. If you already own Modern Warfare and you have it installed, the download for Warzone will be between 18GB and 22GB. For everyone else, the game will be an 83GB to 101GB download.

EA Sports is trying to improve responsiveness in FIFA 20

EA Sports has announced that it is planning to introduce an in-game button overlay for some FIFA 20 players as part of its efforts to improve the game’s responsiveness.

FIFA 20 has received criticism from its community for its unresponsiveness during online matches, with players feeling that there’s a noticeable delay between when they press the button and when their desired action happens on screen.

In a recent Pitch Notes article published to the EA site, the developer has described its “live study methodology” whereby, following internal testing, it tests potential changes with a small number of real players in order to garner feedback and real-world data.

Live studies

The upcoming in-game button overlay is part of this and is intended to measure the real-world impact of a “small backend change related to button responsiveness”.

According to EA, in the coming weeks a select number of players will see the overlay (pictured below) added to the top right-hand corner of their game, though it notes that the image depicts an in-progress view which is subject to change.

EA explains that this button will allow players to see their inputs in real-time as well as “the impact the connection with the data center has on those inputs.” The hope is that this will help EA analyze matches more efficiently as, it says, it “can get clips of players sharing their experience and raw input.”

EA plans to share its findings from the study at some point in the future, though it points out that “like any real-world study”, it can take time to get “actionable results”. That means we don’t know exactly when we’ll find out what the developer’s next steps are but given the short lifecycle of FIFA titles and the fact that, based on previous release patterns, late 2020 is highly likely to herald the release of FIFA 21 we imagine players are hoping to see improvements sooner rather than later.

EA stresses in the article that this is just one part of its efforts to tackle connectivity and responsiveness issues in the game and that as progress is made it may roll out more changes using these live studies.

Microsoft reveals more Xbox Series X specs, confirms 12 teraflops GPU

Microsoft is revealing more specifications about its next-generation Xbox Series X hardware today. The biggest new confirmation is that the Xbox Series X will include 12 teraflops of GPU performance, which is twice what’s available in the Xbox One X and eight times the original Xbox One. This type of performance puts the Xbox Series X beyond most mid-range graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia, and it’s an impressive jump for a game console. It certainly shows that the next-gen Xbox and PS5 are going to go far beyond the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro.

“Xbox Series X delivers a true generational leap in processing and graphics power with cutting edge techniques resulting in higher framerates, larger, more sophisticated game worlds, and an immersive experience unlike anything seen in console gaming,” claims Xbox chief Phil Spencer.

Microsoft has previously revealed hardware-accelerated DirectX ray tracing and variable rate shading (VRS), and the company says it has patented its own form of VRS. “Rather than spending GPU cycles uniformly to every single pixel on the screen, [developers] can prioritize individual effects on specific game characters or important environmental objects,” explains Spencer. “This technique results in more stable frame rates and higher resolution, with no impact on the final image quality.”

Microsoft’s next Xbox is Xbox Series X, coming holiday 2020

The Xbox Series X will include a custom-designed CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 and Radeon RDNA 2 architecture. Microsoft is also using an NVMe SSD on the Xbox Series X, which promises to boost load times and “nearly every aspect of playing games is improved,” according to Spencer.

Xbox Series X will also support 8K gaming and frame rates of up to 120fps in games. Microsoft says it has partnered with the HDMI forum and TV manufacturers to enable Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on the Series X as part of its HDMI 2.1 support. This should reduce input lag and smooth out visuals in games on TVs.

Alongside the hardware specs, the next-gen Xbox Series X is also set to feature a “quick resume” feature. Microsoft used a similar feature on the Xbox One to resume games, but it’s now promising to let Xbox Series X owners resume multiple games from a suspended state. That will be a big improvement for switching between games or when you resume from standby.

Microsoft is also fully supporting backward compatibility on the Xbox Series X, including original Xbox and Xbox 360 games. The Xbox maker is also branding its future Xbox Game Studios as “Smart Delivery,” meaning you can play the games on the Xbox One or Xbox Series X consoles. Third-party publishers will also be able to brand their games in a similar way so consumers know how they’ll work for the next-gen of consoles.

Microsoft is promising to share “share more details about the new Xbox with you in the coming months,” as the company approaches key dates like the Game Developers Conference next month and E3 in June. We’re still waiting to hear more information on pricing, exact availability, next-gen launch titles, and whether a second, cheaper next-gen Xbox is coming in 2020.

Apple’s free learn-to-code Swift Playgrounds sandbox arrives on Mac

Nearly four years after it launched as an iPad-exclusive in 2016, Apple’s Swift Playgrounds app is now available for Mac as part of Apple’s Catalyst app initiative, designed to help bridge the software gap between its macOS and iOS platforms (via 9to5Mac).

The free app cleverly disguised as a video game teaches kids how to use Apple’s Swift programming language, and to maybe build apps of their own. Now that it’s on Mac, it might be easier for kids to publish those Swift apps, too; they can now use those skills on the same laptop they’d need for the company’s Xcode software. Xcode isn’t available on Apple’s tablets.

Apple’s product page also says your code will seamlessly move from iPad to Mac as you write it, and the new app comes with a few Mac-exclusive features, like the option to drag and drop snippets of common code directly into your lesson with your mouse or trackpad. According to 9to5Mac, it also has support for the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar, but they don’t say how it might help.

Designing a more friendly Fortnite with food, puns, and no in-app purchases

Apple Arcade’s latest hit started out as a joke. The developers at Singapore-based Mighty Bear Games had already pitched an idea to Apple for its new subscription service, but two days before CEO Simon Davis was set to fly to California to iron out the details, someone on the team came up with a pun so powerful it derailed everything. That pun was “butter royale,” and it got the studio thinking about ways to make the ever-popular battle royale genre more approachable. It’s a space dominated by behemoths like FortnitePUBG, and Apex Legends, but Davis thought there was enough room to try something different. “We wanted to give an alternative that was much more accessible and family-friendly and non-threatening,” he explains.

Butter Royale, which is out now, is similar to those games in that the ultimate goal is to be the last player or squad standing. Thirty-two players drop onto a quaint suburban cityscape, and you have to gather up gear and weapons to defend yourself as an encroaching storm forces everyone closer and closer together. But that’s about where the similarities end. For one thing, despite being a top-down shooter, Butter Royale is decidedly nonviolent. It’s less battleground, more food fight. You’ll sling popcorn and hot dogs at other players and fire rockets that are actually baguettes. The encroaching storm, which forces players closer together, is a giant wave of melted butter.

Violence wasn’t the only thing the team wanted to change. Butter Royale is also noticeably simpler than its contemporaries; all you can really do is move and shoot. There’s no building or upgrades to fuss with, and you can only carry one weapon at a time. Similarly, the matches are short, usually clocking in at around five minutes. The goal was to boil the genre down to its essentials so that virtually anyone could pick it up and play. It was a philosophy inspired in part by Nintendo. “Mario Kart is a great example of a universal game that you can play regardless of age or skill,” Davis explains. “But there’s nothing really like that from a shooter perspective.”

Butter Royale

Butter Royale is also different in that it doesn’t ask you for money. As an Apple Arcade release, it’s completely free to subscribers, with no in-app purchases whatsoever. For players who are used to spending cash to get the latest skins in Fortnite or Overwatch, it’s a welcome and occasionally jarring change. Despite this, Butter Royale maintains a familiar structure, with what is essentially a “battle pass” where players unlock content over time. There’s also an in-game shop where you can buy things like new characters with in-game currency, but everything in the game is unlocked entirely through gameplay.

“One of the beauties of being on a subscription service is that you don’t have to worry about monetization,” Davis says. “You just focus on creating the best possible experience for everyone. We know that for online games, people want to unlock content over time, and have something that they can keep working towards. The battle pass system works well in that respect. I think the fact that we’re not pushing power-ups or anything like that, also works in our favor. People generally feel pretty good about it. And having the high-level skins can feel like a marker of status.”“YOU JUST FOCUS ON CREATING THE BEST POSSIBLE EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE.”

The game features a huge and — as you can probably guess from the name — very quirky cast of characters to unlock. That includes everything from a grandma with curlers to a young father with a baby strapped to his chest to a bride in a wedding dress. They’re strange, silly, and — most importantly — very diverse.

According to Davis, around 20 people worked on Butter Royale, with staff hailing from eight different countries. That, combined with the international nature of Apple Arcade (all games have to be localized in a large number of languages, for instance), meant diversity was particularly important. “We wanted to create a game that really reflected who we are and who our players would be as well,” Davis says. “We wanted everyone who plays, wherever they are in the world, to be able to play as someone who looks like them.”

The team is being quiet on what, specifically, fans can expect in the future. Changes to how progress works are coming, alongside the usual content updates like new weapons and characters. The developers may even experiment with Fortnite-style limited time game modes. But Davis says that Butter Royale has already garnered a very dedicated audience, and the plan is to change the game, in large part, based on their feedback. “We plan to support the game and really listen to our users,” he says.

The PS5 official website is now live, suggesting a reveal isn’t far behind

Sony has quietly launched the PS5‘s official website ahead of the next-gen console’s release in late 2020.

Initially spotted on Reddit (via GamesRadar), the website offers fans the chance to sign-up “to be among the first to receive updates as we announce them, including news on the PS5 release date, PS5 price and the upcoming roster of PS5 launch games”.

The website is currently live in the UK and Germany, its Australia and US counterparts haven’t launched yet.

PS5 trademark listing points to imminent launch event reveal

The PS5 reveal date edges closer – and there’s now more evidence to suggest a PlayStation 5 launch event is imminently upon us.

Tech site LetsGoDigital has spotted a trademark application for the PlayStation 5 that’s been submitted in Switzerland this week by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It covers off all you’d expect from a console, including hardware, peripherals and gaming software.

In the notes for the trademark application is also a priority claim for the trademark filed much earlier in Jamaica, dated October 3, 2019. It’s common practice for a company to first file their trademarks in nations like Jamaica that don’t list applications in readily searchable databases online, showing that Sony’s been firming up its PS5 plans for some time.

PS5 launch incoming?

It’s all starting to make the stars align for Sony’s next-generation console: with the hardware legally protected, it can start going about promoting it in earnest ahead of it going on sale.

So are we any closer to a PS5 launch event? The passing of time means, yes, of course – but are we any closer to confirmed date? There’s still no official word from Sony on that.

But that hasn’t stopped the internet hive mind from attempting to play Sherlock, with a Reddit thread last week believing it had found enough evidence to have tracked down a New York City venue for the launch event, and 29 February date. We had our doubts, but with Sony’s operations picking up speed, the company will have to show its hand sooner or later.

Atari-branded hotels with e-sports studios and game rooms are coming to the US

Atari has licensed its name for a number of brand partnerships in the gaming space, but the company’s latest deal to build eight Atari-branded hotels marks its foray into the hospitality industry. The company announced a licensing deal with US real estate developer True North Studio and GSD group to build eight hotels in the US. Construction will begin in Phoenix in mid-2020, with more hotels to come in Austin, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle.

The “video game-themed destination” will offer gaming playgrounds that include VR and AR games, and some locations will have venues and studios to accommodate e-sports events. Atari says the hotels will have meeting rooms, co-working spaces, restaurants, bars, a bakery, a movie theater, and a gym. The company says it’ll be a destination for families and business travelers, which lends itself to a hilarious image of a businessman trying to print something in the meeting room while a Fortnite tournament happens in the next room.

Atari will receive 5 percent of hotel revenue, and it received a $600,000 advance for inking the deal. The hotel will be located close to Steve Wozniak’s Woz U university campus in Arizona, which is also associated with the Phoenix-based GSD Group.

Meanwhile, the development of the Atari VCS retro console has been reported to be undergoing significant difficulties, with the console’s lead architect claiming that he hadn’t been paid in over six months. If Atari, a gaming company, is having this much trouble with building a game console, it paints a troubling picture of how the hotels will turn out.

The PS5 controller will also work with your PS4, if this Sony leak is to be believed

A key feature of the PS5 controller was seemingly just leaked – and by PlayStation itself, no less.

As spotted by GamesRadar, a comparison page for the Sony PS4 and PS4 Pro appeared to list both consoles as being compatible with the DualShock 4 and DualShock 5 controllers – “DS4 / DS5”.

That’s the first time we’ve heard confirmation of current-gen consoles supporting the next-gen controller.

The page was listed by PlayStation France, though the below screengrab was posted to forum site Resetera before the company spotted the leak.

While it’s possible that this is a typo – which we have to at least consider – the official listing on a highly technical page means it’s much more likely that the PS5 controller will be able to work across consoles both old and new.

We know that Sony is thinking a lot more about backwards compatibility in general, and it would be a nice option for gamers wanting to enhance their PS4 experience without upgrading to a several-hundred-dollar console.

No going back

Sony Interactive President Jim Ryan has spoken out on the high-end capabilities of the controller, stressing the improvements that its improved audio and haptic feedback (instead of the DualShock 4’s rumble feature) have on existing PlayStation games.

Ryan said, “3D audio and the haptic feedback support of the controller are also things that, when you try them, you will be surprised at how big a change they are. Even just playing the racing game Gran Turismo Sport with a PlayStation 5 controller is a completely different experience.

“While it runs well with the previous controller, there is no going back after you experience the detailed road surface via haptic control and play using the adaptive triggers.”

We also expect the PS5 controller to work on PC, as the DualShock 4 currently does.
