Apple redesigning iPhone this year with flat sides and smaller notch, says report

Bloomberg has published a new report detailing much of Apple’s product roadmap for 2020, including the four new iPhones that have been widely rumored. Corroborating Ming-chi Kuo’s analysis from last year, Apple is said to be redesigning the iPhone Pro chassis with flat edges reminiscent of the current iPad Pro. Kuo claimed the screen glass would still be slightly curved, while Bloomberg says it’ll be flat.

Bloomberg reports that there will be two iPhone Pro models with three cameras on the back and that they will feature the new iPad Pro’s LIDAR 3D-scanning system — it’s not clear whether that will take the place of one of the iPhone 11 Pro’s existing three cameras, though. It’s also unclear whether the boxy redesign will come to the two lower-end dual-camera models that are reportedly replacing the iPhone 11.THE FACE ID NOTCH WILL ‘LIKELY’ BE REDUCED IN SIZE

The report says that the largest iPhone Pro will have a “slightly larger” screen than the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s 6.5-inch panel, and that the Face ID notch will “likely” be reduced in size. Kuo predicted last year that the Pro models would come in screen sizes of 5.4 inches and 6.7 inches.

Bloomberg also says to expect a smaller, cheaper HomePod speaker as early as this year, following up on its own reporting from August. This new model is now said to have a similar design to the existing HomePod, but come in at around half the size. Apple is reportedly planning a second-quarter release.

Finally, Bloomberg also says to expect new versions of the MacBook Pro, Apple TV, iMac, and entry-model iPad, though doesn’t give any details on what the refreshes might include. A 14-inch MacBook Pro with scissor-switch keyboard has been predicted by Kuo.

Apple doesn’t expect the coronavirus pandemic to cause major delays, according to Bloomberg, though certain iPhone models could end up launching weeks later than usual. Engineers are reportedly heading to China to finalize work on the lineup next month ahead of mass production.

Apple iPhone 9 could be made official on April 15, new rumor says

The upcoming Apple iPhone 9, the successor to the iPhone SE from 2016, has been rumored for a long time now, and it looks like we’re finally getting very close to its official introduction. A few weeks ago a report talked about the phone being delayed indefinitely because of the COVID-19 outbreak, but apparently Apple may have had a change of heart.

According to a new report, the company held an internal meeting to discuss how to proceed, and the conclusion of said meeting is that the iPhone 9 will get official on April 15. It will then become available on April 22. It’s unclear if the company plans to hold an online event for the launch, or will simply issue a press release and be done with it.

iPhone 9 could be made official on April 15, new rumor says

The iPhone 9 will allegedly start at $349 or $399, thus being an intriguing new entry into the mid-range price wars. Design-wise, expect a blast from the past, with huge screen bezels and a physical, capacitive Touch ID sensor on the front, below the display (but not under it, mind you).

As far as the release timeframe goes, since we’re still globally dealing with a pandemic, it pretty much goes without saying that Apple’s plans might change yet again. Hopefully they don’t, and then perhaps Google will also choose to announce the Pixel 4a soon so it can battle it out with the iPhone 9 for the hearts and minds of consumers who aren’t willing to pay twice or thrice as much for a smartphone, especially given the situation right now.

Apple’s new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro cameras: what they do

Apple has officially announced its latest iPhones and confirmed that, yes, there’s a huge, squircle-shaped camera bump on the back of each of these new phones. On the flagship iPhone Pro models, it contains three separate cameras, and on the iPhone 11, there are two.

Each camera has its own purpose, and you’ll want to use them for different photo scenarios.

IPHONE 11

  1. 12MP regular camera | 26mm f/1.8 | Optical image stabilization: The standard iPhone camera has been upgraded with a new Night mode that should be able to better compete with Night Sight on Google’s Pixel smartphones in terms of low-light performance. Apple has also improved image processing to preserve more highlights and details in each shot.
  2. 12MP ultra-wide camera | 13mm f/2.4 | 120-degree field of view: Instead of following its own tradition with a portrait lens, Apple made the somewhat surprising decision to go with an ultra-wide camera that will allow iPhone 11 owners to capture more of their surroundings in every photo. The camera app’s viewfinder will show you both what the main camera sees and a preview of what would be in the ultra-wide shot.

Front camera: 12MP TrueDepth camera with slo-mo video and 4K60 recording: Apple’s selfie camera can now capture wider-angle shots when rotated to landscape. The company is also adding slow-motion video recording.

IPHONE PRO AND PRO MAX

  1. 12MP regular camera | 26mm f/1.8 | Optical image stabilization
  2. 12MP ultra-wide camera | 13mm f/2.4 | 120-degree field of view
  3. 12MP telephoto / portrait lens | 52mm f/2.0 | Optical image stabilization: Apple’s latest camera designed for portrait photos is exclusive to the iPhone 11 Pro models.

NEW SOFTWARE TRICKS

Apple says it has made significant improvements to photo and video processing with the latest iPhone cameras. The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro preserve highlights and more detail in each still shot, and they’ve been optimized for low-light settings with the help of a new Night mode.

With all new iPhone models now having multiple cameras, Apple has taken effort to prevent shifts in exposure and color tone when changing between them — especially when recording video. The iPhone 11 Pro will let app developers record with more than one camera simultaneously for more creative possibilities. And an audio zoom feature will hone in on whatever sound is coming from the subject you’re pointing the cameras at.

Specifically for the iPhone 11 Pro, Phil Schiller previewed an upcoming Deep Fusion feature that analyzes 9 photos (including one long-exposure shot) taken in sequence. The device’s neural engine then analyzes the collection to create an optimal end photo that borrows the best elements of each image. Schiller said it was “computational photography mad science.” Deep Fusion is coming in the fall.

The 5 biggest announcements from Apple’s September 2019 event

Apple moved to a dual-camera system starting with the iPhone 7 Plus, adding a telephoto / portrait lens with a closer perspective to complement the standard-angle camera. The portrait lens remained exclusive to Plus models until the iPhone X in 2017. Since then, the X, XS, and XS Max have all featured two cameras. The iPhone XR stuck with just one.

Apple’s next iPhone event will take place on September 10th

Apple has sent out invitations for its annual iPhone event on September 10th, where the company is widely expected to announce the iPhone 11. The event will take place at the company’s Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Although Apple’s invitation doesn’t explicitly say what the company plans to announce at the event, the rumors suggest we’ll see three new iPhone models, and these will act as successors to the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max. Two of these phones are expected to feature Apple’s first triple-camera system on the rear of the device, and the successor to the XS could also have a slightly bigger 6.1-inch display (up from 5.8 inches on the current model).NEW IPHONES AND MAYBE A MACBOOK OR TWO?

Another rumor suggests that these iPhones could support bidirectional wireless charging, allowing them to charge AirPods when used with their new wireless charging case. Upgrades to battery life and Face ID biometric security, as well as the use of new shatter-resistance technology have also been suggested.

Apple rarely keeps its launch events focused on just a single category of products, however. Last year, it announced the Apple Watch Series 4 as well as a software update for the HomePod, alongside its new iPhones. However, as it currently stands, the main products that Apple is rumored to be planning for the end of this year — an all-new 16-inch MacBook Pro, an update its existing non-Touch Bar 13-inch model, and a new iPad and iPad Pro — are the kinds of devices that it doesn’t normally announce alongside its phones. We’ll be surprised if Apple didn’t have some news to share about the range of services it’s currently in the process of launching, though, and there’s a chance we could see new titanium and ceramic cases for the Apple Watch.

Naturally, The Verge will be in attendance to bring you the latest news and announcements from California. Be sure to check back for our live blog and details on how you can watch the event yourself.

P.S. Do you see any hints buried in Apple’s invite image above? The company often includes a hint of some sort, and we’ve got a few ideas: maybe it’s the rumored return of Apple’s rainbow logo to the backs of its phones, or maybe it’s the leaked vibrant colors of the next-gen iPhone XR. Or maybe we’re looking at an artist’s interpretation of what a MicroLED screen looks like up close. It’s impossible to say for sure.

Correction: This post originally stated that the successor to the iPhone XS Max was rumored to feature a bigger screen. This should have read iPhone XS.

Bloomberg: iPhone 11 lineup will offer improved Face ID sensor, better low-light photography

Apple’s September 10 event is fast approaching and rumors surrounding the next-gen iPhones are finally gaining some consistency. A new report from Bloomberg confirms previous rumors that Apple will streamline its iPhone naming scheme by introducing the “Pro” moniker for the successors of the iPhone XS and XS Max. The main addition to the new Pro models will be their triple camera setup which will be able to combine shots from all three lenses to produce higher resolution images with better low-light performance.

In addition, users will have new post-processing options with frames, crop and video editing capabilities built right in the Photos app. Face ID will see a massive overhaul on the new iPhones with a multi-angle sensor which will enable unlock even when the phone is laying flat on a table. Under the hood, the A13 chipset will feature a new co-processor developed for AR applications. Apple will also offer new matte color options.

The report also details the expected new 10.2 iPad which will replace the entry-level 9.7-inch iPad. The iPad Pro line will receive a spec bump and will come with the same camera as the flagship iPhones. A cheaper HomePod is also said to be in the works but it’s going to be available in early 2020.
