Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ & S20 Ultra First Impressions

So today, as mentioned earlier was Samsung’s big reveal event where they would reveal the long anticipated smartphones of the company for 2020.

After watching the whole presentation following you will read some of my thoughts.

First, the trendy Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Nice design, improved from the last year’s Galaxy fold but with high cost. Available, at 14th of February. Watch the introduction video below and let me know with your thoughts.

Second, the Galaxy S20 line up!

We have 3 different models this year, the Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S20+ and the pro edition Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Watch MKBHD giving his first impressions regarding the devices.

Third, is the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the beast in the papers.

It has all the big numbers, 5000mAh battery, 512 GB of storage + expandable, 108MP camera, 100x zoom and lots more!! Again watch the first impressions video from the Youtuber.

And last, fourth. In way to show off their latest phones Samsung chose to film and broadcast their presentation using only Galaxy S20 Ultras! It was pretty impressive seriously, you can now do so many things with only one device and have a great result.

But… there is always a but! For me is not the numbers that count. I can not say, the 2020 series of phones from Samsung are amazing, They have everything a normal user and a pro user might want to full feel their daily needs but focusing on the numbers sometimes compromises quality.

And if you compare the camera quality of these phones with the Pixel 4 or iPhone 11 pro cameras you will notice the quality in the images that the camera takes in terms of color correction, noise and dynamic range.

Samsung Galaxy S20 range may not hit stores until over a month after launch

The Samsung Galaxy S20 range is set to be announced on February 11, but if you were hoping to be able to get your hands on one of the phones on that day – or even close to that day – you might be out of luck, as the latest leak suggests the range won’t hit stores until March 13.

That’s according to several sources speaking to Frandroid, who add that you’ll be able to pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S20 and its siblings from February 11, they just won’t be delivered until March 13.

This isn’t the first time this date has been put forward either, with Ishan Agarwal (a reliable leaker) tweeting a few days earlier that delivery/sales of all Galaxy S20 series models will probably start on or around March 13.

So with two separate sources putting this date forward and with no alternate information, there’s a good chance it’s true, especially this close to the announcement of the range, as it’s likely that by now the date has been decided.

There’s reason to doubt the date

Having said that, there are also some reasons to doubt this date. First off, Frandroid’s information only refers to the French release date, so it’s possible that other regions will get the Samsung Galaxy S20 range earlier. But the Samsung Galaxy S10 range hit all major markets on the same day, so it’s unlikely that the S20’s street date would be staggered.

A more significant reason to doubt the March 13 date is that there was only around a two and a half week wait between the Galaxy S10 being announced and it hitting stores, so this would be far longer.

We’re not sure why Samsung would opt to do that, but that’s the only real red flag, so if we had to guess right now we’d say March 13 is probably the date to put in your calendar – just maybe write it in pencil.

Still, if this date is right it gives you a bit longer to save, which you might need to, as these sources also reiterate a recent pricing rumor, agreeing that the Samsung Galaxy S20 will start at more than €900, the Galaxy S20 Plus will start at more than €1,000, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra will start at more than €1,300.

Those prices would likely see the phones cost even more than the Galaxy S10 range in the likes of the US and UK.

Galaxy S20 Ultra leaked image offers another hint of 100x digital zoom

We’ve been hearing plenty about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S20 (previously known as the Galaxy S11) this week, and a newly leaked image gives us some idea of what the rear camera array on the Ultra model is going to look like.

Not only that, but the image posted by tipster Ishan Agarwal on Twitter makes another mention of the 100x digital zoom that’s supposedly coming to the most powerful and most expensive S20 in the range.

That matches up with spec sheets we saw yesterday and other rumors that have been floating around in the last few days. It appears that the Galaxy S20 Ultra is going to have a very impressive quad-lens camera attached on the back.

And Samsung is apparently so proud of what it’s been able to put together that a “100x” label will be attached right by the periscope camera that also offers up to 10x optical zoom – though we’re not sure if that’s truly optical or not.

Optical zoom means zooming in without any loss in picture quality, in the same way as conventional cameras do – even when you’re zoomed in, all the original detail is retained, up to the zoom level limit.

Digital zoom, meanwhile, uses software trickery to make educated guesses about details in images, and where pixels should be put as a picture gets bigger. It’s not considered as good as optical zoom, but it’s easier to do on a phone with limitations on space.

With Google, Apple and others now relying so heavily on algorithms and digital enhancements to make mobile pictures the best they can be, the line between digital and optical zoom is blurring.

We’ll have to wait and see exactly what optical and digital zoom levels the Galaxy S20 phones use, and how much of a role software processing plays. The big announcement day is February 11.
